A Coordinated Approach to Breast Cancer and Reconstruction

Breast reconstruction is an important part of recovery for many women following mastectomy or lumpectomy. At PSG, reconstructive planning begins early and is coordinated closely with surgical oncologists and other members of the cancer care team.

  • During your initial consultation, your reconstructive surgeon will:
  • Review your diagnosis and treatment timeline
  • Discuss reconstruction timing (immediate or delayed)
  • Explain available surgical techniques
  • Outline recovery expectations and risks
  • Help you determine which option aligns with your goals

Reconstruction planning is individualized and structured to align with urgent cancer treatment timelines while preserving safety and quality outcomes.

Types of Breast Reconstruction

There are two primary approaches to breast reconstruction. Your surgeon will determine which is most appropriate based on anatomy, cancer treatment plan, and personal preference.

Implant-Based Reconstruction

Implant reconstruction uses silicone or saline implants to restore breast contour. In some cases, direct-to-implant reconstruction may be possible at the time of mastectomy. In other cases, a tissue expander is placed temporarily before final implant placement.

This approach is often appropriate for patients seeking shorter operative time and recovery.

Autologous (Tissue-Based) Reconstruction

Autologous reconstruction uses your own tissue—typically from the abdomen or other donor areas—to recreate breast shape. These procedures may involve advanced microsurgical techniques to transfer tissue safely and maintain blood supply.

Tissue-based reconstruction may provide a more natural feel and long-term stability for some patients. Your surgeon will carefully review the advantages, risks, and recovery differences between each option.

Immediate vs. Delayed Reconstruction

Breast reconstruction may be performed at the time of mastectomy (immediate reconstruction) or after cancer treatment is complete (delayed reconstruction).

Immediate reconstruction allows restoration of contour during the same operation as mastectomy, which may reduce the number of total surgeries required. Delayed reconstruction may be recommended when additional treatments such as radiation therapy are planned.

Both options are discussed in detail during consultation to ensure timing aligns with medical safety and patient preference.
