Facial Aging

The aging process is natural and inevitable. Wrinkles form and the skin thins, droops, and sags. But that doesn’t mean you have to take the aging process lying down.

There are lots of cosmetic procedures available that can restore a more youthful, refreshed appearance. Many people are hesitant to pursue cosmetic procedures, however, due to the risks and recovery time involved with surgery.

Fortunately, there are several non-surgical procedures that can reverse the signs of facial aging.

Below, the team at The Plastic Surgery Group discusses two of the most popular ways to treat common signs of aging, including lines, wrinkles, deep folds, and loss of volume.

Botox Injections

Botox is a frequently used, non-surgical means of treating facial wrinkles. It’s injected into a particular area of the face to block signals being sent from the nerves to the muscles that control the expression lines, so the muscles are unable to contract. This causes the muscles to temporarily relax, which results in a smoother appearance.

Botox is often used to smooth forehead lines, frown lines, crow’s feet, lines around the mouth, and neck bands.

Botox doesn’t require any downtime. It takes only a few minutes to complete, and the procedure is relatively pain-free, although some people experience a headache or minor bruising at the injection site.

Patients see the results of their Botox treatment within a week, and the results generally last three to six months.

Dermal Filler Injections

Another common sign of facial aging is the loss of volume or fullness. During the aging process, the body produces less collagen and elastin. This causes the skin to lose its elasticity, making it prone to sagging and developing deep folds, especially between the nose and mouth.

Dermal fillers injected under the skin can restore facial volume and fill in folds and wrinkles. Made with hyaluronic acid, a natural substance produced by the body, dermal fillers like Juvederm can restore volume to the cheeks and chin, fill in hollows under the eyes, and reduce the appearance of nasolabial folds and lip lines.

Like Botox, dermal fillers don’t require any recovery time, and the procedure is painless. Some patients may experience slight bruising or swelling, but any side effects should subside within a few days.

The effects of dermal fillers show up immediately after the procedure, and results last up to one year.
